Who?

  • This course is aimed at foundation trainees (F1/F2) who want to improve their understanding and ability to manage commonly encountered surgical presentations as well as practical skills.

  • Appropriate for those with an interest in pursuing a career in surgery as well as those with upcoming surgical jobs, regardless of career goals.

What?

  • One day focused course aimed at improving theoretical knowledge as well as essential basic surgical skills.

  • The course curriculum focuses on presentations commonly encountered by junior doctors with an emphasis on the areas they most often find challenging.

  • Teaching will consist of a series of short lectures, followed by an afternoon workshop led by registrars, giving participants the opportunity to practice essential surgical skills in a more relaxed environment than theatre.

  • View provisional timetable here.

Why?

  • The course aims to improve theoretical knowledge to allow junior doctors to more confidently and appropriately manage pre and postop surgical patients which can be a very daunting task, particularly on the many occasions they find their registrar and consultant in theatre!

  • Trainees assisting in theatre are often expected to show that they are competent in knot tying, instrument handling and basic laparoscopic skills, however, opportunities for teaching are often limited by time constraints and the theatre atmosphere can be intimidating. Practical sessions led by registrars giving participants the opportunity to develop new skills, practice and learn from their mistakes in a less pressured environment while receiving constructive feedback.
